Welwitchia University held a special gala on August 30, to celebrate the success of the Nurses Gala Dinner– a prestigious national event founded by, Mr. Immanuel Ndumba, a lecturer at the institution .

The event took place at the Roman Catholic Hall and brought together healthcare leaders, nurses, students and invited guests. Beyond its elegance, the gala served a deeper purpose: to honour nurses and spotlight mental health in the healthcare profession.

“It’s about recognising the truth that nurses are human beings too. They come with emotional trauma and stress, but they never receive any places where they can talk about it or receive time off,” said Ndumba.

In her keynote address the Minister of Health and Social Services, Hon. Dr. Esperance Luvindao, emphasized nurses’ emotional labor and their essential role in the health care system. “Nurses are the hands that hold us when fear takes over, the calm in the chaos, and the strength that carries us through pain and uncertainty,” she said.

Dr. Luvindao further announced that the Ministry of Health is reviewing the healthcare structure to improve nurses’ working conditions, career progression, and access to postgraduate training. For many in attendance, the gala was both a celebration and a much needed reminder of the vital role nurses play in society. As Ndumba emphasized, “You give so much to the world. Now it’s your time to be celebrated. Come dressed up, come as you are, but most importantly, come to be reminded that you matter.”

The successful launch of the Nurses Gala Dinner marks the beginning of a tradition that not only honors the nursing profession, but also champions the wellbeing and resilience of those who stand at the front line of healthcare in Namibia. For Welwitchia University, the Gala Dinner showed how far the Institution has come. It was a reminder that Education is not only about Books and Exams, but also about caring for the people who care for others.

The event highlighted the University’s growth and its strong focus on both Excellence and Compassion. The Gala Dinner also honored nurses working in Hospitals, Clinics, and Rural Areas. “Your work matters, and your Nation honors you,” the host said. The University wanted to shine a light on the hard work nurses do every day, often in difficult conditions. Support from donors and partners was also recognized.

Their help allows the University to improve Mental Health Programs, offer better resources to students, and build Global connections. “Donors are like the wind beneath our wings,” a speaker said. “With their support, our future is bright.” The message to students and alumni was clear: they are the heart of Healthcare. “You are the hands that heal and the voices that comfort,” the host said. Students were reminded that their hard work will one day make a big difference.

The Alumni were thanked for carrying the Welwitchia name with pride. When asked to describe the night in one word, the answer was “transformative.” It was a night of healing, joy, and deep respect for the people who keep Namibia’s healthcare system alive.
