Beyond the Classroom: Student Realities at Triumphant College

Being a student is already a demanding journey, but combining academic responsibilities with leadership roles can significantly amplify the pressure.

This is the reality for many Student Representative Council (SRC) members, including Faith Kavee Kalomo, who serves in the Vice Secretary General portfolio at Triumphant College.

The Weight of Academic Pressure

For Kavee, balancing academics with SRC duties is more than just time management; it’s a constant test of endurance. As both a student and a leader, he is expected to maintain strong academic performance while addressing student concerns and contributing to institutional development. “

The pressure workload at Triumphant College is definitely there,” she explains. “Long hours spent studying, planning events, attending meetings, and completing assignments often result in physical exhaustion and limited rest. Beyond the physical strain, the mental toll is equally significant. Constant deadlines and expectations can lead to stress and anxiety, affecting overall well-being.”

This experience reflects a broader issue within higher education: while academic success is prioritised, student well-being is often challenged in the process.

Moments of Doubt and Resilience

Like many students, Jesaya has faced moments where the pressure felt overwhelming. At times, the weight of academic demands, financial challenges, and personal responsibilities led him to question whether continuing in his SRC role was sustainable.

However, resilience played a key role in overcoming these challenges. A clear long-term vision, combined with peer support, helped him stay focused. Rather than giving in to temporary struggles, he chose to see these experiences as part of personal growth.

Teaching Methods: A Double-Edged Sword

Triumphant College’s teaching and assessment structures aim to promote discipline and continuous learning. While this approach has its benefits, it also comes with challenges.

The heavy emphasis on continuous assessments and strict deadlines can create pressure that affects students’ confidence and passion for learning. For some, the system becomes less about understanding content and more about meeting deadlines, which can diminish the overall educational experience.
