The 2025 Academic Affairs Committee of the University of Namibia’s (UNAM) Student Representative Council (SRC) stands as a powerful example of what student leadership can accomplish when driven by purpose, unity, and resilience. This reflection captures the committee’s journey; from academic reforms and welfare initiatives to national funding victories and faculty engagement.
It is not just a record of milestones, but a testament to the strength of collaboration across campuses, the courage to advocate for change, and the commitment to leave behind a legacy of service. Through every challenge and triumph, the Academic Affairs team proved that leadership is not about position; it is about impact.
“Leadership is best defined not by title, but by the impact one leaves behind. It is about entering a space and leaving it more functional, more hopeful, and more inclusive than before.” - Cipriano Sirongo, Secretary for Academic Affairs.

A Year of Purpose, Progress, and Student-Centered Impact
In the first semester, the committee successfully ensured that no
student wrote two examinations on the same or consecutive days.
This reform allowed for adequate preparation and reduced mental
strain. Although the second semester posed challenges due to
programme specialisations, the framework laid down remains a
foundation for future coordination.

Examination Feeding Programme: Sustaining a Legacy
Continuing the legacy of the late Dean Margriet Mainga, the
committee coordinated the Student Feeding Programme to ensure
that no student entered an exam venue on an empty stomach. This
initiative now continues under the SRC in collaboration with Campus
Connect, reinforcing the importance of student wellbeing in academic
success.

Exam Induction Day: A First for UNAM
The committee introduced the first-ever Exam Induction Day;
a student-centered event designed to prepare learners for
examinations through study techniques, stress management, and
motivational engagement. With support from the Assistant Registrar,
Student Counsellor, UNAM Alumni, and a motivational speaker, and
sponsorship from PNA, the initiative was recommended for inclusion
in UNAM’s annual calendar across all campuses.

Funding Advocacy: Nursing Allowances
The committee advocated for increasing the Nursing Students’ Rural
Placement Allowance from N$200 to N$250 per day.
Benchmarking in South Africa Final Reflection
The team participated in a benchmarking visit to South Africa, engaging with institutions such as the University of Cape Town and the University
of the Western Cape. The experience offered valuable insights into student leadership structures and governance models, inspiring renewed
approaches to representation at UNAM.
Final Reflection
The 2025 Academic Affairs Committee leaves behind a legacy of action, unity, and student-centered reform. From exam timetables to national funding victories, each milestone reflects a commitment to service and impact.
“Every challenge we faced was a chance to grow, to serve, and to leave the space better than we found it.”— Cipriano Sirongo
Their work reminds us that true leadership is about standing with students; and building systems that last.
