It’s a new year, and just like everywhere else, universities are working overtime to meet students' needs. COTA is no different. According to Tuhafeny Shiyukifeni from the SRC for New Media, things are already moving behind the scenes.
“At COTA, resilience starts even before you’re admitted. The application and audition process isn’t about being perfect, it’s about showing up and staying committed. Not everyone gets in on the first try, and that’s okay. Students are given guidance and feedback to help them improve and come back stronger. It’s a reminder that rejection isn’t the end, it’s part of the creative process.
For first-years, one of the biggest lessons is learning not to compare yourself to everyone else. Yes, it’s competitive, but talent alone won’t carry you. Discipline, consistency, and being open to learning matter just as much. You’re not expected to have it all figured out on day one. Growth happens with time, and confidence follows.
COTA also allows students to explore their creativity while keeping things structured. You’re free to try new ideas and develop your own style, but within clear briefs, deadlines, and critique sessions. This balance prepares students for real creative spaces, where freedom still comes with responsibility.
Challenges are part of the experience. Through critiques, revisions, and intense workloads, students learn how to handle feedback and push through setbacks. Confidence isn’t built through praise alone, it comes from persistence and improvement.
On a personal level, COTA has helped me find and refine my artistic voice. Second year was demanding, with work across graphic design, photography, filming, and Photoshop. Now, heading into third year, I approach my work with more focus and intention. COTA has taught me how to communicate ideas visually, defend concepts, and adapt creatively without losing authenticity.”
