Campus Connect Magazine recently sat down with the Rector of the College of the Arts (COTA), Ms. Angelika Schroeder, who shared the institution’s key highlights, achievements, and its vision for the future.

Reflecting on the year, Ms. Schroeder identified graduation as one of COTA’s most significant accomplishments. “I always refer to the graduation,” she said. “It is one of our biggest milestones because it shows that students who have studied for three years at NQF Level 5 have completed their internships, met all curriculum requirements, and are ready for employment.”

She explained that COTA places strong emphasis on connecting students to industry partners before they graduate. This ensures they gain hands-on experience and often creates pathways to continued internships or future employment opportunities.

Throughout the year, COTA recorded several milestones across its programmes. One of the stand-out achievements was the successful student fashion showcase at the Windhoek Fashion week, which forms part of the curriculum. The collections and garments displayed by first-, second-, and third-year students demonstrated the high level of creativity and practical competence the institution strives to instill. Thus also, strengthening the institution’s visibility in Namibia’s vibrant creative industry.

“All our students are required to produce practical work,” Ms. Schroeder added. “It is an essential component of their learning and growth.” Alongside the designers were the production students who livestreamed the whole show.

COTA has also been strengthening its communication platforms. Although the institution’s podcast has faced a few challenges, the Rector revealed that it has now been reassigned to the Student Representative Council (SRC). The aim is to create a vibrant communication channel where students, industry professionals, and external stakeholders can engage in discussions and share ideas. Highlighting the support the institution receives from the creative industry

In March, COTA hosted a collaborative workshop with lecturers from Switzerland, who introduced innovative sculpting and pottery techniques using aluminum-based kilns. Visual arts students from COTA and the University of Namibia (UNAM) worked together throughout the week, demonstrating interdisciplinary artistic growth.

COTA continues to play a key role in supporting national events and cultural expression. During the memorial service for the late President, COTA students presented original artworks, while Another great achievement was the Visual Arts Department displayed sculptural pieces at campus that reflect Namibian identity and history. Students across departments regularly work with NGOs, companies, and community organisations to produce radio programmes, documentaries, graphic design materials, and public service announcements.

Looking ahead, COTA is set to undergo a significant academic transition. Ms. Schroeder announced that the college is working on upgrading its qualifications by introducing an NQF Level 6 diploma, phasing out the current Level 5 programme. “It is still a diploma, not yet a degree, but we are growing gradually,” she explained. “The new qualification will start at NQF Level 4 and exit at Level 6.” She also confirmed that applications for the 2025 academic year are officially open.We must grow with the education system. Introducing Level 6 diplomas allows our students to compete better for opportunities and continue into higher studies,” Ms. Schroeder explained.

The College of the Arts continues to affirm its status as Namibia’s only fully-fledged arts training institution, dedicated entirely to creative education. With continued industry support, curriculum enhancements, and a growing portfolio of practical opportunities, COTA remains committed to nurturing the next generation of creative professionals.
