Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) is more than just another institution of higher learning. Beyond everything, we have produced CEOs, innovators, public servants, entrepreneurs, and leaders across different industries, and that speaks to the quality we build and the standard we carry. And the moment you chose NUST, you became part of that legacy too.

As students, your main priority is your education and aligning your academic journey with the industry and career path you are aiming for. But at NUST, you also gain something deeper than a qualification, you gain exposure, growth, and the grooming that turns students into confident professionals. I say this as someone who is a direct testament to that grooming, because I can confidently say the leader I am today was shaped through my journey at NUST. So whether you are joining us for the first time, returning for another year, or still finding your feet, I want you to know that you are in the right place, and you are capable of more than you currently believe.

NUST understands that not every applicant will be admitted immediately, and that can be discouraging. However, what matters most is that applicants are not left with no options. For students who are not admitted on their first attempt, one of the ways NUST supports them is by allowing them to branch into other programmes or options they applied for or are interested in, depending on availability and admission requirements. This ensures that students still have a pathway to begin their academic journey, rather than losing a full year. My advice to applicants is to remain patient, explore available alternatives, seek clarity from the institution where needed, and most importantly to actually pursue a qualification that is aligned with their goals, especially in this era of subsidized tertiary education.

To our first-year students: welcome once again. You deserve to be here. You belong here! The transition into university can be overwhelming, but you don’t need to have everything figured out in the first week, or even the first month. Confidence is not something you arrive with, it’s something you build through consistency and courage.

Here are a few things I would encourage every first-year student to do:

•Take your academics seriously from day one. Don’t wait until tests are close to start preparing and studying.

• Ask questions early. There is no strength in suffering silently. University is your second home, it’s your new community, so feel at home.

• Choose your circle wisely. Your environment will either push you forward or pull you back.

 • Get involved. NUST has opportunities that build you beyond the classroom.

And most importantly, don’t be intimidated by the campus, the culture, or the people around you.

As the Student Representative Council (SRC), we are stepping into this year with clear awareness that students want leadership that is visible, responsive, and accountable. We are ready, not because we believe everything will be smooth, but because we are committed to showing up and doing the work. Personally, I am here to revive student governance. Students deserve a representative structure that is strong, organised, and able to deliver real impact.

One of our key priorities as the 11th SRC Administration is the amendment of the NUST SRC Constitution, which has not been amended since it was adopted and approved by Council in 2017. That process is important because it is about strengthening our structures, improving accountability, and ensuring that student leadership remains relevant and effective in the current student environment. Beyond that, we are focused on ensuring that students are supported in practical and meaningful ways throughout the year, from academic matters, to student welfare concerns, to everyday issues that shape the student experience.

Our commitment is simple, to represent and show up for our constituents in every possible way.

Welcome back to campus, welcome back to purpose, and welcome back to the great NUST.
