Windhoek, Namibia — 29 June, 2025
Welwitchia University, formerly known as Welwitchia Health Training Centre, received full university status in March 2024, as published in Government Gazette No. 8336.
Since then, the university expanded quickly across Namibia and introduced more programmes.
Founded in 2013, Welwitchia is known for training healthcare workers.
Now, as a full university, it offers a wide range of courses to help build Namibia’s future.
Recent reports reveal that the university invested N$2 billion to improve its campuses in Windhoek, Swakopmund, Grootfontein, Outapi, Nkurenkuru and Mururani.
A new campus in Oranjemund was officially opened in March 2025, offering health and technical courses.
Welwitschia plans to offer 15 new study programmes between 2025 and 2026, including bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees.
10 of these programmes were made available for the 2025 intake. It also offers short courses and online postgraduate programmes to help more people learn.
Tracy Schaller, manager of marketing and stakeholder engagement, the university plans to offer qualifications in all fields of learning.
She said all new programmes are approved by the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA), hence students can apply for NSFAF funding.
Welwitchia currently has around 300 staff members and plans to grow the number in the next five years.
The university is hiring more qualified individuals, especially those with PhDs and professorships.
